Building an Internet Website

For almost forty years I have been in business for myself. I have started over twelve businesses from scratch. For those of you that don’t know what it means to start a business from scratch it means in old fashion terms you scratch an idea down on paper and create a business from that. Today you young people would type it out on your computer or text messaging device and get on with it. The bottom line is I didn’t buy an existing business or a franchise. Every business I started I created from just an idea and with my enthusiasm and what knowledge I could acquire I started a business. Some times I had very little capital. I just took my idea, went out and started selling, turning several businesses into multi-million dollar companies.

Each of these businesses was what I would call a bricks and mortar businesses. A bricks and mortar business was a term used by my Uncle Carl who flew bi-planes back in World War I. Several businesses I started from my home but I had to go out and sell a physical product or a service. These businesses usually grew into a business that I ran out of a building thus comes the term bricks and mortar (like a brick building). Then along came personal computers and the internet making some businesses very different. Thirty years ago I could never have envisioned myself writing a book but today almost anyone can do it if they so desire.

A few years ago a young multi-millionaire friend of mine suggested I write a book on my various businesses and sell it on the internet. I wrote the book but I did not publish it. About a year ago he and I had lunch and he suggested I start up an internet business selling my book and sharing my business start up knowledge with others. He said he had several websites he was working on at that time and made it sound quite simple. I very cautiously checked out the internet business and bought an on line book called an e-book and some additional information for about $49.00 then I had to purchase a program to download the e-book for a total of about $79.00 (you may already have the program on your computer). This e-book confirmed everything my good friend had told me and expanded my knowledge of the for profit internet website business. About two months later I ran across a company mentioned in the e-book called Site Build It and purchased their program for around $299.00. Everything was very clearly explained with their step by step program.

If you remember what I said in the ABOUT US section I told you I was a “short sprinter” not a “long hauler” (which means I am very impatient). As usual, I was in a rush to get my new business up and running. Site Build It actually has the best program I have ever seen but I didn’t follow directions. I became restless and after having started many different kinds of businesses from scratch I thought I would short cut the system. I went over to the local college, hired a graduate student with a masters degree in computer science to build me a website. After spending nearly $1,000 including his services, the Site Build It program and the e-book plus the download program three months later I still did not have a working website. My very talented graduate student with a master’s degree and five years experience working as a programmer for Texas Instruments didn’t have what it took to drive people to my website. He admittedly said he did not have the knowledge to make me successful in the internet website business. I went back to Site Build It for their professional services and as you can see I am very satisfied. Now, you could probably get started using Site Build its program for under $400.00 but I decided after all my previous delay to spend an extra $1,599 and have them get me up and running as soon as possible. If your attention span and patience are as short as mine this may not be for you. The information on this page is provided for those FEW people who know that they have the ability to start on a project and drive themselves onward with only their own self-motivation to spur them on. Almost every business I have started I just went out and learned how to make it work fast. However, the website business is a little bit different. Just by looking at a website does not tell you how successful it may or may not be. You can set up an attractive website in just a couple days at a hundred different places. But that does not make you or your website successful. What makes your website successful is what goes on behind the scenes. That is what I could not learn by being just my old regular street smart self. If I had done in the beginning what I just did with SBI I would have been on line six or maybe eight months ago making a profit right now.

I am a hire and get it done soon kind of guy but it didn’t work out that way for me this time, because I thought with all my business experience I knew a better way. I was wrong. So all in all I have spent about $2,600 to get up and running but you do not have to spend anything near that unless you are very impatient like me.

If you decide to build a website I suggest you use Site Build It as your host. They have many “construction tools” that are very easy to use if you have a little patience. Site Build It! does more than TELL you how to start a website. They HELP you build a website. They have customer support standing by to answer your technical questions. They have an active forum of users who let you in on their tips and tricks. They have many successful; clients… and over 200 of these clients have volunteered to serve as “examples” and let you look through their websites for ideas. (Note: though the price works out to $25/month, you do need to pay by the year, which works out to $299 USD, Having the pay-in-advance system weeds out the people who aren’t really serious about starting a website. It keeps them from wasting money by making several small monthly payments, only to later drop out.)

Best of all, Site Build It submits every web page you build to the Search Engines---you know, Google, Yahoo and MSN/Windows Live. With Site Build It managing your site you should start showing up on the MSN search engine after a month or so--- and the Google Search Engine after only a few months. From what I think I understand that’s really FAST.

I read about one site in particular that had 144 visitors the first month. 668 the second month, 37,000 the twelfth month and after two years they now have 250,000 site visitors a month. That is why it is worth it to use Site Build It, they do what is necessary behind the scenes to bring you traffic.

HOW TO START A WEBSITE…CHOOSE YOUR HOST WISELY

At this point I must say with all my many years of experience starting businesses, the web site business has been the most frustrating and difficult for me personally. However, I must take the blame for most of the problems. As I said earlier I am very impatient and tried to take some shortcuts that caused me problems. I am the kind of guy that will bring home a new lawnmower in a box, open it up, assemble it and when I have a couple of parts left over then I read the instructions. If that fits you as well expect a few problems building your website. In my case, all of the people with SBI were very helpful. Most of the delay in my success came from me.

Building a website takes DAILY PERSISTENCE and hard work. It is like starting any other kind of business some people compare it to getting married or having a baby; it requires THAT much dedication to the project. But, if you’re really SURE that you want to start a website business… why would you want to waste all your work building it with a company who can’t give you the right results?

If you choose a cheap-o company, you end up paying as much or MORE than Site Build It’s’ $25/month fee… because the other company’s’ cheap prices are just TEASER prices. The cheap prices for a website don’t include any of the add ons that you need to run a successful on-line hobby or business. From the other companies you’ll continually get offers trying to “upgrade” your website with extra-fee features. If you really go ahead and purchase the add-on features… and yes, you may really NEED more features in order to make your website a success… then you’ll find that cheap companies really AREN’T cheap after all.

While you COULD simply skim through their pages, you will learn more if you STUDY their free material. You would not spend $40 on a web-building book at Barnes & Noble just to skim it and throw it away, would you? No, of course not--- because you just spent your hard-earned money on that book. Well then, don’t treat Site Build It’s info like it’s “nothing” just because it’s free. You’ll really save the money you would have spent at the bookstore if you read their site thoroughly. I spent around $75 for an e-book when you can get the same information for free if you just take your time.
